Greening Los Angeles alleyways
More than 900 miles of alleyways thread through the cities of Los Angeles County. We want to transform them into green corridors that link community assets like schools and shops and encourage people to walk, talk, and enjoy their neighborhoods. It's an idea that's catching on! Read what the Los Angeles Times had to say, and see what else we're doing in and around Los Angeles.
Every day is Earth day at TPL
But Friday, April 22, is a special date to celebrate the planet. In cities across the nation, TPL and Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants are partying all week long with special EarthCare Week events that will entertain, inform, and inspire-all for a good cause. Proceeds will benefit TPL's Parks for People work in cities nationwide.
Three more things to do for the planet
1. Do something nice for planet Earth: support conservation with a gift to TPL.
2. Take the Half Price Books Pledge to Park it for the Parks (for each person who pledges to walk, bike or take public transit at least one day in April, TPL gets a dollar).
3. Go outside! The best way to celebrate the outdoors is to enjoy it.
Spotlight: Boeddeker Park
Only steps from the Powell Street cable car turnaround-a San Francisco tourist hotspot-the Tenderloin is a neighborhood of apartment buildings, single-room-occupancy hotels, soup kitchens, and agencies that serve the homeless and others in need. It's also a densely settled family neighborhood. Boeddeker Park is one of the Tenderloin's few parks, and the only one open to adults. Read more.
When the Rx calls for outdoor fun ...
We all know that physical activity helps prevent obesity and related medical problems. There is mounting evidence that providing places to exercise-parks, primarily-can improve health. TPL leads the pack in expertise in this area, and the latest report from TPL's Center for City Park Excellence, From Fitness Zones to the Medical Mile, offers a compelling look at the data. We'll be telling you more about the report in the upcoming issue of Land&People magazine, coming to your mailboxes in June. Do you subscribe?
The Civil War at 150
Most people agree that the first shot of the Civil War was fired at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, followed immediately by a canon barrage from Morris Island, one of many battle sites TPL has helped protect over the years. One hundred and fifty years later, TPL is helping to ensure that our Civil War heritage sites aren't just getting older--they're getting better.
New Conservation Champions program
Individuals who give at significant levels to our operating fund help us do what we do best in the best possible way. We think this makes them Conservation Champions: we're rolling out a new recognition program to honor individuals whose annual contributions of $2,000 or more provide TPL with the flexibility to meet challenges and seize unexpected opportunities. Speaking of heroes ...
Our work would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers, who strengthen their communities through their contributions of time, energy, and talent. One of our own volunteers, Tom Reeve, recently shared his personal perspective on working for something more than a paycheck. On the heels of National Volunteer Week, we offer you his story with gratitude to all of you who lend a hand all year long.
Green Heart Award
We knew we'd won a few hearts with our Valentine's Day Green Heart drive, but had no idea we were in the running for a Green Heart Award! Thanks to all of you who voted, The Daily Green has named Cahuenga Peak "Best New Park."
