Many genres have used the themes and character types that originated with the Western. On a few notable occasions, the Western has borrowed elements traditionally found in other genres. Such is the case with The Magnificent Seven, a remake of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954). In the film, a group of Mexican peasants hire seven American gunfighters to help protect them from a gang of one hundred bandits. More . . .

Two celebrated Mexican directors based their movies on works about Mexico by foreign authors. Macario, based on B. Traven's book, tells of an Indigenous woodcutter in colonial Mexico who encounters God, the Devil, and Death on the Day of the Dead. La Perla, based on the John Steinbeck book, tells how a treasured pearl brings misfortune to a peasant family. More . . .
