As the holidays approach, there will be more lights and sirens from police cars than usual. We don't see a significant increase in crime this time of year. However, it's always a good reminder not to leave any valuables in your parked car that are visible. No one wants the bad guys to be taking the gifts that were intended for your family, friends or even your favorite Senior Lead Officer.

This is the time of year where I'm very proud and fortunate to be part of the North Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. I'm also very thankful for working in a community that really cares and gives back, not only in the support of the local police, but also a community whom reaches out to the other members of their community who may not be as fortunate as they are and to those who have just fallen on hard times.

Each holiday season is very difficult because we know there are more people who really need help than we are able to assist. As police officers respond to calls throughout the year, we often take notice of the families that we are able to help so that we can make a difference in how they can celebrate the holidays. Often, some are victims of crime and others are just victims of circumstance. Either way, there are some people we never forget, especially when children are involved.

Through the generous donations from the local residential and business community, we are able to make a difference in the lives of many people who didn't believe it could ever happen. Throughout the month, I get to take part in something that is very special and at times difficult to describe. On numerous days, officers travel in a caravan of police cars, carrying Santa Clause. In addition to the lights and sirens, the police cars are often decorated with garland, tinsel and other holiday decorations. Some destinations are planned such as the Loman School for the Disabled or the many Head Start school programs where the presents we provide may be the only ones some of these children will ever receive.

I'm especially proud of the holiday party we share with the Activities for Retarded Children, known as the ARC Foundation. Each year officers receive a large index card with a person's name and age along with the special gift request they wish to receive. A luncheon is planned and numerous people attend. It doesn't matter if it's a work day or a scheduled day off. It's never a problem getting officers or community members to attend or participate. The happiness and excitement of seeing the individual's face as they sit with Santa is priceless.

We have already started receiving calls to be included in the tree or food basket giveaway. Children we see in the street or at schools have even started asking if we will drive through their neighborhood this year. It's not uncommon to see families of all ages lined up for our arrival. This is a nice change since most people usually run from us.

I'm sure there are many other holiday events that take place throughout the city, but nobody takes more pride and does it better than the community of North Hollywood. None of this could be possible without your generous support.

If you would like to make a difference in someone's life, donations will be accepted at the North Hollywood Police Station until the 25th of December. Please help us with an unwrapped toy or with our food drive.

Thank you,

John Catalano, Senior Lead Officer 32740@lapd.lacity.org
